Diagnosis Criteria of Tic disorder
Persistent(chronic) motor tic disorder or vocal tic disorder
- One or more motor or vocal tics present. However, both vocal tics and motor tics should not appear.
- Tic symptoms repeat exacerbation and improvement, but persist for more than 1 year from the first appeared.
- Onset before the age of 18.
- The symptoms must not be caused by the use of other substances or medical diseases.
- It must not meet the diagnostic criteria for Tourette's disorder.
If tic symptoms start before the age of 18 and last for more than 1 year and there are only motor tic symptoms, it is diagnosed as persistent (chronic) motor tic disorder. If there are only vocal tic symptoms, it is diagnosed as persistent (chronic) vocal tic disorder.
Provisional tic disorder
- One or more motor or vocal tics are present.
- Appears less than 1 year from the time the tics first appeared.
- Onset before the age of 18.
- It must not meet the diagnostic criteria for Tourette's disorder or persistent (chronic) motor or vocal tic disorder.
Provisional tic disorder is diagnosed if less than 1 year has passed since the onset of the first tic symptoms, or if all symptoms disappear within 1 year.
Tourette's Disorder
- Multiple motor tics and one or more vocal tics appear during some period of the disease course. The two tics do not necessarily appear at the same time.
- Tic symptoms often repeat exacerbation and remission, but persist for more than 1 year from the first tic appeared.
- Onset before the age of 18.
- Symptoms must not be caused by other substances or medical conditions.
Tourette's disorder is diagnosed if there are vocal tics and motor tics even if they do not exist at the same time during the course of a tic disorder lasting more than 1 year.

Causes of Tic disorder
Genetic factors
Evidence for the heritability of Tourette's and chronic tic disorders has been revealed in twin and family studies. In Tourette's disorder, the concordance rate of identical twins was 53-56%, and when chronic tic disorder was included, the concordance rate was up to 77-94%. In addition, in family genetic studies, it is known that the probability of developing tics in the family of patients with Tourette's disorder or chronic tic disorder is 10-50 times higher than that of the general population.
Environmental factors
Environmental factors are also known to be involved in the occurrence and symptom change of tic disorders. Pregnancy and perinatal problems, various drug use, general medical factors, immunological factors, and life event factors are known widely.
Brain dysfunction
Among the neural circuits in the brain, research results have been consistently presented to show that dysfunction of a neural circuit called the cortical-striatal-thalamus-cortical circuit is associated with tic symptoms. It has been argued that disruptions in the connections and interactions of parts within neural circuits lead to pre-emotional and emotional symptoms.
